About Yorkies and their coats

Yorkies , or the Yorkshire terrier is a very small dog breed. This Terrier specie originated in historical area of Yorkshire in England as early as the 1800′s. Yorkies were bred for theit small size and other features.

Yorkies ( Yorkshire terriers) descended from the Scottish breeds such as the now extinct Paisley Terrier and the Skye Terrier. In its turn, other breeds have been created from the Yorkshire terrier, such as the Australian Silky Terrier and the Biewer Terrier.

For adult Yorkshire terriers, the importance is placed on the colour of its coat, the quality and texture of its coat. The hair must be glossy, straight and silky. Normally the coat is long and grown out and is parted down the middle of the back.

Yorkshire Terriers (Yorkies) have very soft coats. Yorkies have two types of coats. Silky or soft coats. The silky coats are the coats of the show dogs. The soft coat breeds have short coats and do not need to be brushed very as often.

It is important that from the back of the neck to the base of the tail, the coat should be a dark gray to a steel- or grey-blue, and the hair on the tail should be a darker blue. On the head, high chest, and legs, the hair should be a rich tan. Also, in adult dogs, there should be no dark hairs intermingled with any of the tan coloured fur.

Newborn Yorkshire Terriers (Yorkies) are born black with tan points above the eyes, around the legs and feet and toes, the inside of the ears, and the underside of the tail. Occasionally Yorkies are born with a white patch on the chest or on the toes. White patches fade with age, and are usually gone within a few months. Wite markings on the chest is generally an indication that the puppy will be a good coat grower.

The final colour of the coat is sometimes anly reach up to three years.

Yorkie coats normally require daily brushing and a bath at least once amonth. The fur may be trimmed short for easier care but it is believed that trimming may affect the colour over a long period. The coat is always left long for shows. The coat may be trimmed to floor length to enhance movement and and appearance.

The long coats of Yorkies (Yorkshire Terriers) take a lot of time and energy. Some owners wrap the coat in paper like rice paper, tissue paper, or plastic, after a light oiling with a coat oil. Yorkies need a lot of attention and prospective owners should study the behavior and caretaking before they take the step.

The Biewer Terrier or Biewer Yorkie is becoming more popular than any of it’s kind. A very child like temperament and attitude make this breed something that every dog lover wish for. Three colors make this lovely terrier very popular. It is also called the Toy TERRIER. The Biewer Terrier considers other dogs and it’s family members at all times. Biewers are extremely loyal and loveable dogs that will steal your heart the moment you see them. Biewer Terriers or Biewer Yorkies are not noisy and they are normally happy fun loving dogs. Biewers or Biewer Terriers are not difficult and although they all have wonderful temperaments, they also have their own personalities. Biewer Terriers or Biewer Yorkies, are now available in South Africa. The demand is extremely high for this lovely new breed and therefor also in a higher price range. Biewer Yorkies (Biewers) can be viewed at www.yorkiesoftreasures.co.za website.

A Short History of the Biewer Terrier

Mr Biewer spent 5 years selectively breeding these dogs until he was able to breed and establish a breed true to a standard uniquely the Biewer Breed. The dogs were registered with the ACH as Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon, pronounced “Bee-vir”. In 1989 Mr Biewer signed the standard for this wonderful new breed, it was that of the Yorkshire Terrier with the coloring being White-Blue-Gold.

Mr and Mrs Biewer had been breeding, raising and showing Yorkshires for 20 years, when on January 20th, 1984 the first blue, white and gold puppy named “Schneeflocken von Friedheck” was born. This was the start of the Biewer Terrier Breed. Yorkie Terriers now in white, blue and gold.

Mr and Mrs Biewer kept a close reign on the Biewer breeding programs in Germany, so their quality breeding dogs were hard to come by and quite costly. Mr Biewer became ill and he was not able to carry on the dream he and his wife had set out to accomplish for the Biewers.

Then the decisions of their breeding program became the responsibility of Mrs Biewer and the care of her husband and the dogs became to much when Mr Biewer died in 1997.

Mrs Biewer discontinued her breeding program shortly thereafter, but the dreams of his treasured breed will live on forever, thanks to the efforts of many dedicated Biewer Terrier breeders.

Being a small breeder, my little treasures get all the love, devotion and attention they deserve.

My dogs are definitely not kennel dogs and consider themselves as family members living in the house with us.

I am dedicated to the health and happiness of my home raised puppies and therefore only sell puppies to carefully selected pet lovers who will love and raise them as good as, or better than I do.

Enjoy my website and feel free to contact me.

We are a member of KUSA

BE sure you buy your Yorkie from a reliable KUSA member

The Yorkshire terrier made its first appearance in a bench show in England in 1861 as a “broken haired Scotch Terrier”.

More than 47 000 Yorkies were registered in the USA in 2005. The average weight of your Yorkie should be between 2,0 and 3,2kg. Beware: The extra tiny dogs (less than 1.2kg), are extremely susceptible to hereditary and non-hereditary health problems which can result in large veterinary bills and lots of tears!

The Yorkie is a small dog with a big attitude! One minute they will snuggle on your lap and the next moment they will tear after the neighbour’s Rottweiler, promising to show who is boss! They are terriers after all and will protect their territory valiantly!

Please supervise around small children. Children need to understand that the tiny bone structure can break much easier than many toys. Yet – a wonderful companion for adults and older children!!

Please Remember:
Never put pressure on your breeder or insist on getting your puppy before it being at least eight weeks old! The parents still have a huge role to play in teaching the puppies, especially during these last weeks (8-10).

Be careful not to leave your Yorkie in a car. They are very susceptible to extreme hot or cold temperatures. They have a very low hair density where only one hair sprouts from each hair follicle and no undercoat like most dog breeds. Because they resemble human hair in so many ways, people being allergic to dogs can more than often tolerate Yorkies!
