Droewors, Droe(dry)wors almost always accompany biltong. The two go hand in hand - at any butchery you will always find them next to each other. It is even more popular than biltong, because it is a little cheaper than biltong.
The number of recipes for droewors is legion, because there are such a variety of tastes in South Africa. The recipe that we here at Delightful Foods use is a special family recipe which is kept a secret to guarantee you the best dry wors in the country. All our dry wors is made using only the best quality beef, pork salt and spices. We only use the best quality (derms) in our wors which is then also left to winddry ,just like our biltong.
The period of time the wors is left to dry, varies from 2 to 3 weeks, depending on how dry you want it to be. The longer it hangs, the drier it will become. Some people prefer it very dry, but others can’t wait for their favourite snack and it is edible after some 10 days of hanging.
Droewors is an ideal outdoor snack, especially appreciated by hikers hiking the many hiking trails and walks in South Africa. It is ideal because it is light, and can be carried with ease by hikers as part of their meals, or together with peanuts, raisins and energy bars, form a healthy snack providing enough energy for a tiresome trip.
Because droewors is such a favourite with South Africans, it is produced commercially by large factories to supply in the countrywide need, but we here at Delightful Foods produce our droewors homemade and with loving care. We put in extra care and pay attention to add just the right amount of meat and spices so that every centimetre of wors that we make will be perfect. We never deviate from our recipe because if we do, our wors will not be as perfect as we want it to be.
